📚 Exam Preparation and Examination Information
This page provides comprehensive information on exam preparation and examination procedures at
Friedrich-Alexander-Universität Erlangen-Nürnberg (FAU), including preparation resources,
registration procedures, examination regulations, and important rules in case of illness or failed exams.
🧩 The Foundation: Tutorial and Exercise Sheets
The exercises from tutorials and exercise classes are the core basis for exam preparation.
Students should be able to solve these tasks confidently, as they usually reflect the methods
and difficulty level expected in the examination.
- ✅ Master weekly assignments and problem sets.
- 📝 Rework exercises without consulting solutions.
- 📌 Clarify open questions early in tutorials, office hours, or study groups.
🏛️ Past Exams via Student Associations (FSI)
Many Fachschaftsinitiativen (FSI) maintain collections of past exams (Alt-Klausuren),
which may be used for exam preparation.
💡 Past Exams in StudOn (If Provided by Professors)
Another important source is StudOn.
Many professors upload past exams directly to the StudOn course—sometimes they even discuss solutions during the lecture.
This is extremely valuable for understanding exam style and typical tasks.
- 📂 Check the StudOn course for sections like “Past Exams”, “Old Exams”, or “Exam Preparation”.
- 👨🏫 If solutions are discussed in class, take notes—this is often “gold” for the final exam.
- ⚠️ Availability varies: providing past exams is usually voluntary.
📘 Examination Regulations and Module Requirements
All study and examination regulations (Prüfungsordnungen, PO) are available here:
- 🔗 Examination regulations overview: https://www.fau.de/fau/rechtsgrundlagen/pruefungsordnungen/
- 🏛️ First select the faculty, then the degree program.
- 📄 The most recent version is always listed as “consolidated version”.
- 💡 Tip: Download the PO at the beginning of your studies for future reference.
- 🧾 The PO version number is also displayed in your personal Campo account.
All modules listed in the module curriculum plan must be completed during the course of study.
Possible elective options must be observed carefully (including footnotes).
A bachelor’s degree program comprises 180 ECTS credits, including the bachelor’s thesis.
🗓️ Exam Registration
Exam registration takes place each semester during a FAU-wide, centrally defined registration period.
The exact dates are announced in advance by the Examination Offices.
- 🔗 Examination Offices (dates & contact): https://www.fau.de/education/beratungs-und-servicestellen/pruefungsaemter/
- 🖥️ Registration for exams must be completed via Campo.
🔁 Repeat Examinations
Since the winter semester 2024/25, there is no automatic registration for repeat examinations.
Students must register independently for repeat exams (typically via Campo).
- 📝 In most cases, deregistration from repeat examinations is also possible.
- 📞 The responsible Examination Office must be contacted in such cases.
- ⚠️ Students must be enrolled in order to participate in repeat examinations.
↩️ Withdrawal from Examinations
Withdrawal from an examination is generally possible within the deadlines specified in the applicable examination regulations.
Deadlines may also be communicated by the responsible Examination Office.
- ⏰ In many cases, withdrawal is possible up to three working days before the exam.
- 📘 Binding deadlines are defined by the relevant PO and/or the Examination Office.
- ℹ️ Further information is available from the responsible Examination Office.
🤒 Illness Symptoms on the Examination Day (Status: 28 February 2024)
Students are urgently requested to participate in examinations only if they are free of symptoms.
Students who show symptoms associated with COVID-19 (acute, non-specific general symptoms,
loss of smell or taste, or respiratory symptoms of any severity) are requested to undergo testing
before attending the examination.
🩺 If illness symptoms are present, a medical certificate must be submitted.
Further information on the formal requirements for medical certificates can be found on the
respective websites of the Examination Offices for the individual degree programs.
⚠️ Please note
- ❌ Medical certificates issued by telemedicine or online medical services (e.g. video consultations) are currently not eligible for a valid withdrawal from an examination. Only medical certificates issued following an in-person appointment with a personal medical examination of the student will be accepted.
- 📄 Medical certificates must generally be submitted in original paper form.
- 🦠 In the event of a COVID-19 infection on the examination day, a same-day rapid test from an official testing center replaces the medical certificate.
- 🧪 If a COVID-19 infection was confirmed prior to the examination day by means of a PCR test, the positive PCR test replaces the medical certificate. A positive PCR test is valid as proof for a period of 10 days.
⛔ Withdrawal from or Termination of a Registered Examination (Status: 15 November 2024)
📘 Withdrawal from a registered university examination is subject to the provisions of the applicable examination regulations.
Withdrawal must be declared via Campo within the deadline specified in the respective examination regulations.
⛔ Withdrawal after the start of the examination is generally not possible.
📝 The same examination regulations apply to the termination of an examination after it has begun.
Where the applicable examination regulations require the submission of a certificate issued by a trusted medical examiner
(vertrauensärztliches Attest) for the recognition of an examination termination, such a certificate must be submitted accordingly.
⚖️ Compensation for Disadvantages in University Examinations (Status: 09 July 2022)
♿ If compensation for disadvantages in examinations is required due to a disability or chronic illness
(e.g. additional examination time, extended deadlines, or other adjustments),
students must contact the FAU Representative for Students with Disabilities and Chronic Illnesses
at an early stage.
💬 Advice is provided regarding possible forms of compensation, and a recommendation is issued.
This recommendation must be submitted without delay to the responsible Examination Office.
🏛️ The decision on whether compensation for disadvantages is granted is made by the responsible Examination Committee.
It is essential to apply for compensation at an early stage, as otherwise it cannot be ensured that approved measures
can be implemented in time for the examinations.
❌ What Happens If an Exam Is Failed?
The number of permitted attempts is generally regulated as follows:
- 🔢 Four attempts for module (partial) examinations
- 🔢 Two attempts for examinations contributing to the GOP
- 🔢 Three attempts for internships, field seminars, and excursions
If the final attempt is failed, the examination entitlement for the respective degree program or subject is lost.
This may result in a nationwide exclusion from further studies in that field. In combined degree programs,
the examination entitlement for the other subject usually remains valid.
In such cases, the Examination Office issues an EN notice (endgültig nicht bestanden).
An objection period of four weeks applies.
For questions regarding further academic planning after a loss of examination entitlement,
students are advised to contact the Central Student Advisory Service (ZSB).
For formal questions regarding the EN notice and/or the loss of examination entitlement,
the responsible Examination Office must be contacted.
