Getting around Bavaria by public transport is easy and efficient. Below you’ll find practical tips for traveling between Erlangen, Nürnberg, and Munich, including recommended apps, train types, and ticket information.
📱 DB Navigator App – Highly Recommended
The DB Navigator App is one of the most useful tools for traveling in Germany.
- 🚆 Shows all train connections and many bus connections (including local transport).
- ⏱️ Real-time updates on delays, platform changes, and cancellations.
- 🎟️ Buy and store tickets directly in the app (paperless).
- 💸 Often displays cheaper options such as “Super Saver” fares.
- 🧭 Very helpful for planning trips and managing transfers.

💡 Tip for Deutschlandticket Users
In the DB Navigator app, you can set a filter to show only trains included in the Deutschlandticket.
This way, you will only see RE, RB, and S-Bahn connections and avoid ICE trains (which are not covered).
🚆 Erlangen ↔ Nürnberg by Train
There are two main options:
🚄 Regional-Express (RE)
- Direct connection
- ⏱️ Travel time: about 12–20 minutes
- Stops mainly at major stations (Erlangen Hbf ↔ Fürth ↔ Nürnberg Hbf)
- Best choice if you want to reach the city center quickly
🚈 S-Bahn (S1)
- Runs about every 20 minutes
- ⏱️ Travel time: about 30–35 minutes
- Stops at several smaller stations (e.g. Fürth, Vach, Eltersdorf, Erlangen Paul-Gossen-Straße)
- Good if you live or study near one of the intermediate stops
👉 Tip: For city center to city center travel, the RE is faster. For local flexibility, use the S-Bahn.
⚡ München–Nürnberg-Express (MNE)
The München–Nürnberg-Express (MNE) is a special type of Regional-Express train in Bavaria.
- 🚆 Route: Munich (München Hbf) ↔ Nürnberg (Nürnberg Hbf)
- ⚡ Uses high-speed tracks between Ingolstadt and Nürnberg
- 🚀 Top speed up to 200 km/h
- ⏱️ Travel time: about 1 hour 45 minutes
- 🛑 Stops at only a few major stations (e.g. Ingolstadt Hbf, Allersberg/Rothsee)
- 🎟️ Deutschlandticket is valid (because it is officially an RE)
👉 In short: A fast regional train that feels a bit like an ICE, but works with the Deutschlandticket.
🎟️ Ticket Information
- RE, RB, and S-Bahn trains are included in the Deutschlandticket.
- ICE (Intercity Express) trains are not included and require a separate long-distance ticket.
- Deutschlandticket price: €58/month (regular) / €43/month for students with the Bayerisches Ermäßigungsticket.
✅ Summary
- Use the DB Navigator App for planning and tickets.
- Erlangen ↔ Nürnberg: RE (fast) or S-Bahn (more stops).
- Nürnberg ↔ Munich: MNE is the best regional option.
- Deutschlandticket works on RE, RB, and S-Bahn — not on ICE.
